Remove PDF metadata

Processed right on your device — the file is not uploaded. Page content stays the same.

Text on the page (such as names in the content) is not changed — use Redact for that. A PDF/A file is no longer PDF/A compliant once its metadata is removed.

How to use

  1. Add a PDF: the tool lists the hidden information it finds (author, title, software, dates, XMP, attachments, JavaScript…).
  2. Choose what to remove. Comments and notes shown on the page are only removed if you select them.
  3. Click “Remove selected information”: the new file is reopened to check that nothing selected and no old value is left.
  4. Download the file or continue with another tool (compress, protect…).

Current limits

  • Only hidden information is removed; text and images on the page are unchanged. To remove names or ID numbers in the content, use Redact.
  • Digitally signed files: the signature is no longer valid on the new file.
  • A PDF/A file is no longer PDF/A compliant once its metadata is removed.

Frequently asked questions

What is hidden information in a PDF?

Data that travels with the file but is not shown on the page: author (often the computer account name), title, software and version, creation and edit dates, XMP metadata, sometimes attached files or JavaScript.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Reading and removing the information happen in your browser, on your device; the file is not sent anywhere.

How do I know it is all gone?

After removal the tool reopens the new file and checks that none of the selected items remain and that no old value (such as the author name) is left anywhere in the file — including leftovers from earlier edits.

Does the page content change?

No. Text, images, fonts, form fields, links and bookmarks stay; comments and notes are removed only if you select them.
